Former Player Rose Confessed the Use of Amphetamines

Rose, appearing on the Late Show, claimed to David Letterman he never used performance-enhancing drugs when he was a player. But Rose also confessed later on that he had used "greenies". Pete Rose says he took "greenies" in his playing days only to lose a few pounds. Indeed he explained that he used them considering them as nothing more than "diet pills”. According to the former player taking greenies did not enhance his performance but only allowed him to lose some weight during training camps. During the show he made it clear that greenies should not be confused with steroids.
However neither Letterman nor Rose used the word "amphetamines," which were widely nicknamed "greenies" at the height of their supposed popularity in baseball. The league added amphetamines to its list of banned substances only last year.
Rose said he still enjoys watching baseball, as many as three games a day, and still holds out hope that he will be reinstated by the League. Rose, former hits leader, has been banned from baseball for betting on games as a manager. He claimed that he does not bet anymore on baseball. Rose explained the story behind the balls he signed with the words "I'm sorry I bet on baseball" that hit the market last month. He explained he signed the balls in 2005 for a friend who planned to keep them for 10 or 15 years. But the friend passed them on to a partner, and they wound up in the hands of a collector who put them up for auction, pushing Rose to sign and market his own apology balls.
