The Achievements of Barry Bonds, Part One
Barry Bonds, leftfielder for the San Francisco Giants, is no doubt one of the premier baseball players in the world today. His achievements have been nothing less than extraordinary, and certainly more than comparable to the all-time of greats of the sport.
Here is a short list of some of Bonds more outstanding achievements.
Barry Bonds…
- Holds the record for most home runs in a single season, which stands at 73. The previous holder was slugging icon Mark McGwire, who hit 70 in 1998.
- Holds the record for most walks in a single season, which stands at 199. The previous holder was Babe Ruth, who had 170 in 1923.
- Holds the record for highest slugging percentage, at .863. Again, the previous holder of this record was Babe Ruth, who had a .847 hitting percentage in 1920.
- Holds the record for highest on-base percentage in a single season, with .609. Ted Williams previously held this record with .551 in 1941.
- Is the oldest player to win the National League batting title. He did this in 2002, with a .370 average. He repeated this feat in 2004, when he again won the batting title with an average of .362.
- Has been voted the National League’s Most Valuable Player seven times, winning the accolade in 1990, 1992, 1993, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004. He is the only player to have won the award more than three times. Bonds also finished second in MVP voting in two seasons, in 1991 and in 2000.

Unless you crawled under a rock for the past couple of years, then you should know who Barry Bonds is. Bonds, a leftfielder for Major League Baseball’s San Francisco Giants, has enjoyed stellar success for the past decade, breaking many long-standing records left and right. This article lists some of the achievements that Barry Bonds has attained over the course of his career.
Barry Bonds…
- Has received National League MVP votes for 15 straight years, from 1990 to 2004. This is the second longest-streak (in terms of years) for MVP voting, and is second only to Hank Aarons’s 19 years.
- Holds the record for most home runs in a single post-season, with 8.
- Has won eight Gold Glove Awards as an outfielder, the third-most ever for that position.
- Has been named to thirteen National League All-Star Teams.
- Is the only player in history to have 400 home runs and 400 stolen bases.
- Is the only player in history to have 500 home runs and 500 stolen bases.
- Is one of the three active players who have 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a single season, along with José Canseco and Alex Rodriguez.
- Became the all-time leader in career walks on July 4, 2004 passing Rickey Henderson.
- Holds the single-season record for most walks in a single season, with 232.
- Holds the record for most intentional walks in a single season, with 120.
- Holds the record for most intentional walks in a career, with 604.
